Today, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors are considered by many researchers due to their capabilities and wide applications in biosensors, bioimaging, medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, disease diagnosis, etc. Photonic crystal fiber SPR (PCF) sensors have a very high efficiency and accuracy due to the effective field limitation in the fiber core and the strong resonance of plasmon-surface polaritons (SPP). Various types of such sensors have been introduced and manufactured so far. However, there are limitations to the way metal is placed in the sensor in contact with the analyte. An effective solution is to use D-shaped sensors. In this paper, a modified structure of a D-shaped PCF-SPR sensor that is highly sensitive to changes in the refractive index of the environment is introduced and the effect of structural parameters on its performance is studied.
