Introduction: Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) is one of the most sensitive analytical tools currently known; in some cases, it is possible to obtain a high-quality SERS spectrum in which even a single molecule is involved. Therefore, SERS spectroscopy is considered an extremely promising option and an alternative to the routine analytical techniques applied in food, environmental, biochemical, and medical analyses.
Methods: The present review briefly discusses the definitive and recently developed applications of SERS spectroscopy for the biochemical characterization (especially medical and biological) of important compounds. The theoretical foundations of the SERS effect are also explained, and the future applications of SERS are discussed. The authors hope that this article will be useful for researchers who want to start their investigations in this amazing field of research.
Results: In this review article, the definitive and recently developed applications of SERS spectroscopy for the detection of biochemically (particularly medically and biologically) important species, from the simplest to the most complex ones, are briefly discussed. Moreover, the potentials of SERS to be used as an alternative to routine methods in diagnostic and clinical cases is demonstrated. In addition, it is described how SERS-based sensors work, and finally, future prospects are discussed.
Conclusion: By reading this article, the researcher will become familiar with the functions of diagnostics, direct and indirect fabrication methods for identifying biological analytes and chemicals, applications of biosensors, mechanisms of amplifiers, as well as structures of SERS-based biosensors applied to detect biomolecules.
