In a new clinical trial published in Wound Repair and Regeneration, 02 July 2026, researchers investigated the effect of blue LED light (405 nm) on 22 patients with chronic wounds. Patients were assigned to three dose groups (20, 60, and 100 J/cm²) and received six treatments over two weeks, with bacterial samples collected before and immediately after each session. Results demonstrated that blue LED light reduced bacterial load in a dose-dependent manner (p < 0.0001). Bacterial reductions at 60 and 100 J/cm² were significantly greater (1.55 and 1.82 log₁₀, respectively) compared to 20 J/cm² (0.65 log₁₀). However, this reduction was transient, as bacterial counts returned to baseline levels four days after the final treatment. No significant changes in cytokine levels or wound healing rates were observed across the three groups. The researchers concluded that increasing the dose beyond 60 J/cm² offers no additional benefit and that blue light treatment did not significantly impact wound healing outcomes.
